ELEPHANT CHILD

I was privileged to spend some months in 2001 at ‘Abu Camp’ in the Okavango Delta in Northern Botswana, here there live a herd of trained African elephants and this is ‘Pula’, the youngest of the herd. His name means ‘rain’ in the local language of Setswana, and this is the most fortunate of all things in a desert. In this image he is about 9 months old and I felt truly fortunate to be able to share time with such a young elephant and his herd.

This image has been hand processed on warm tone fibre based paper, fixed, hypo-cleared, washed, selenium toned and washed again to the requirements of ANSI archival standards, by Dennis da Silva, one of the most respected craftsman in his field in South Africa.
