BUFFALO AND OXPECKER

This Cape Buffalo is one of a bachelor herd that is partial to the Mombo Camp environs of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Old bulls like him are known as ‘Dargga boys’ and are aptly given great respect by humans and other animals. The Red Billed Oxpecker on cleaning duty in the buffalo’s ear has a symbiotic relationship removing parasites, insects and keeping any wounds clean and uninfected.

This image has been hand processed on warm tone fibre based paper, fixed, hypo-cleared, washed, selenium toned and washed again to the requirements of ANSI archival standards, by Dennis da Silva, one of the most respected craftsman in his field in South Africa.
