KOSI BAY FISH TRAPS

Kosi Bay is a large estuarine system in Maputaland, KwaZulu Natal in South Africa on the border with Mozambique. Many of the communities surrounding the bay use traditional methods of fishing, this image is a close up of the stick structures that stand in serried rows, funnelling fish into a central enclosed area from where they can be easily caught. The lines of the traps criss-cross the expansive flats of the estuary, each telling the story of the tidal movement in the area.
