As a South African, Africa has always played an integral part in my life and it is this special feeling towards this incredible continent, its peoples, landscapes and wildlife that is shared with you. Though not in a direct way involved in wildlife for many years, it is only until recently that this has now actively come to the fore and in my late thirties decided that the corporate life be left behind, in a manner of speaking, and a more dedicated time spent following life long dreams and aspirations of being in the bush. There is not one particular place that captures a person’s soul but more a mixture of many different aspects of places, that do that.

Sharing the experiences of the bush is more a spiritual journey than a true initial learning experience. The learning comes through interest shown at a later stage but the initial bond is trying to achieve a spiritual connection. The experience is not about individual things but more towards the ‘Pattern Which Connects’. How the whole picture fits together.

The idea of photography as an art form rather than a medium to merely capture an image has long affected my attitude and personal style. Black and white photography in particular emphasizes the tonal qualities possible and often highlights the texture and form of an image. How each person ‘sees’ is the answer to how an image is captured, the reflex between seeing and pressing the button. Inevitably all shots are about depth, shadow, light, texture and above all else formulating completeness within the image. It is not only the initial capturing of the image that is important but also the final reproduction on paper. Thus Dennis da Silva of Silvertone International in Gauteng, an extrordinary Fine Art Printer, "prints from the soul" as he would say.

This Limited Edition range of 30 images has been exhibited in Sydney, Australia; Durban and Johannesburg, South Africa. I am working on exhibitions at the National Art Gallery in Gabarone, Botswana and in the USA. 2004 should be an interesting year. This is part of an ongoing body of work and many exciting travels lie ahead.

It has taken a long time for photography to be accepted as an Art form. It is about a passion for what one does and thus capturing beautiful images through the lens.
